Sex Education Remains Controversial in Texas

Aliyya Swaby of the Texas Tribune reported that the Texas State Board of Education is considering changes to their health education policy. One consideration is adding information about contraception for middle school students.

According to the paper, Texas has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy. The current program emphasizes abstinence only and schools can opt out of sex education.

The article does not address the role of Christian groups but it is well known that conservative Christians and other religious groups teach that sex is only acceptable within marriage. Also, many advocate a ban on abortion.

The decisions made in Texas are important elsewhere because the decisions can influence what publishers include in their textbooks.

For a Christian approach to Sex Education, see Montoya and Crawford's chapter in Christian Morality.
