Angels Christianity and Psychology

Psychology focuses on observable behavior and as such does not address supernatural beings like angels; however, a substantial number of people in the US and around the world believe in angels and a significant minority report interacting with angels.

According to the Bible, angels function as God's messengers as seen in many stories but especially in the Christmas story(e. g., Gabriel).

Researchers at the University of Chicago (NORC) reported survey data July 29, 2023, which showed that 69% of American adults believe in angels.

As far as I know, specific data associating belief or interactions with angels and wellbeing have not been published. This leaves us to hypothesize that people may benefit from belief in God's angels as adding to a sense of comfort, help in coping with life's difficulties, and perhaps a sense of protection as well.

Although the Bible does not mention guardian angels specifically, it appears there is a basis for this common belief (examples): Matthew 8: 10; Psalm 91. There are many other references to angels.

Note

Christianity is not the only religion that includes angels but this blog is about the connection between psychology and Christianity.
